Social Wellness Month
July is Social Wellness Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the importance of social connections and community engagement in our lives. While social wellness is important for all ages, it is especially important for older adults. As we age, maintaining strong social ties can positively impact our overall health, wellbeing, happiness and quality of life.
Tips for fostering social wellness
Join clubs and groups. Getting involved with local senior groups is a great way to stay socially active. Connect with others that share similar interests, whether it’s a book club, gardening, exercise classes or card games.
Stay connected with loved ones. Try to maintain relationships with your family and friends. This can be done through phone calls, video calls or in-person visits. Scheduling regular check-ins helps ensure your relationships stay strong.
Volunteer. Staying active and involved in your community can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment. It is also a great opportunity to meet new people in your community.
Learn a new hobby. Taking up a new hobby or skill can open opportunities for social connections. Whether it’s a cooking class, art class, yoga or language course, learning something new can be both exciting and socially enriching.
Use technology. Technology can bridge the gap in social distance. Social media and online communication tools can help bring people together and keep social connections strong.
