National Nutrition Month
March marks the celebration of National Nutrition Month, highlighting the importance of healthy eating habits and informed food choices. It serves as a time to reflect on how nutrition impacts our overall wellbeing and sustainable habits that support a balanced, fulfilling lifestyle. Proper nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining health, preventing diseases and improving overall quality of life. A well-balanced diet rich in essential nutrients strengthens the immune system, enhances energy levels and reduces the risk of chronic conditions.
Smart eating tips
Include a variety of nutrients. Ensure your diet includes a mix of carbohydrates, proteins and fats to maintain balanced nutrition. Experiment with different foods and flavors to keep meals exciting and nutritionally diverse.
Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps with digestion, circulation and overall wellbeing. It is recommended that men drink up to 4 liters and women drink up to 3 liters of fluids a day (1).
Plan your meals. Preparing meals in advance ensures you have nutritious options readily available and prevents unhealthy last-minute choices. Meal planning can also help save money and prevent food waste.
Limit ultra-processed foods. Reduce consumption of foods high in added sugars, unhealthy fats and sodium. Instead, try to prepare home cooked meals using fresh ingredients to control what goes in your meals.
Make healthy swaps. Substitute processed grains with whole grains, sugary drinks with water and unhealthy snacks with nutrient-dense options like nuts, seeds or fruit.
