Managing rising retiree health care costs in Michigan

Legacy costs are a real challenge for many Michigan local governments. That is especially true when it comes to retiree health care costs as the ratio of active employees to retirees decreases and the cost of medical care increases. Now, in the era of Covid and the economic turmoil that has come with it, the question of how to manage these rising costs becomes all the more urgent.

The many cities, counties and school districts in Michigan that are still directly paying for retiree health care are undoubtedly feeling this pressure. But even those that have reduced or eliminated their OPEB liability in recent years want to help their retirees find affordable health care options.

This roundtable will offer practical advice and innovative approaches from high-performing governments about how they have improved health care options for their retirees while also reducing costs. Hosted by Funkhouser & Associates in partnership with Willis Towers Watson, the roundtable will allow peers to exchange notes and get new ideas on how to tackle these challenges.
