Winter Wellness Tips

As the temperature drops and the days grow shorter, winter presents unique challenges for our physical and mental wellness. From battling cold season to keeping positive during darker days, winter wellness is important for thriving during colder months. Here are some practical tips to help stay healthy, happy and balanced this winter.

  1. Eat well. Nourish your body with healthy and nutritious food that boosts your immunity. Mix seasonal foods into your diet such as leafy greens, root vegetables and citrus fruits (1).

  2. Stay active. Physical activity is crucial, even in the colder months. If it’s too cold outside, opt for indoor workouts like yoga, group fitness classes, or home exercise routines. If you enjoy the colder weather, activities like brisk walking, running, or skiing can keep you moving.

  3. Prioritize skin care. Cold weather can lead to dry skin, but you can help keep your skin healthy by using a good moisturizer, lip balm and sunscreen. Even though the sun is out less and UVs rays are weaker in the winter, it is still important to wear sunscreen to protect your skin (2).

  4. Stay socially connected. Shorter days and longer nights can feel isolating. Make sure to stay connected with friends and family. Try joining community events, hosting cozy gatherings or scheduling regular video calls.

  5. Combat the winter blues. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), or the “winter blues,” affects many people during the darker months. Consider light therapy (which mimics sunlight), adapting a regular sleep schedule and engaging in activities that bring you joy to help lift your spirits. (3)

By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can enjoy a healthier and more vibrant season.
