Honoring Grandparents 

Grandparents Day is celebrated the first Sunday after Labor Day. It is a day to recognize the important role that grandparents play in their grandchildren’s and family's lives, as well as appreciate the older generations of our families. This day serves as a reminder to honor and celebrate grandparents all over the world. 

 

Fun Facts about Grandparents Day 

  1. National Grandparents Day was inspired by a nine-year-old boy who wrote a letter to President Richard Nixon, asking for a day dedicated to celebrate grandparents (1). 

  2. Since it’s proclamation in 1978 in the United States, 22 other countries have adopted Grandparents Day (2). 

  3. The official flower of Grandparents Day is the forget-me-not flower (3). 

  4. There are over 70 million grandparents across the United States (4). 

  5. About 3.4 million grandparents are in the United States work and nearly half of working grandparents are also responsible for the care of grandchildren who live with them (5).
